The studio
Built to create clarity.
Some businesses are built to sell products. Others are built to solve problems. Paper Apothecary & Co. was built to create clarity — exceptional design that removes friction, communicates with intention, and leaves people with a lasting sense of trust.
At the intersection
Where strategy meets craft.
We are equally comfortable designing a luxury real estate website, developing an AI-powered workflow, producing a printed journal, writing long-form editorial, or building the systems that quietly keep a business operating behind the scenes.
Whether the final product is experienced on paper or on a screen, the philosophy stays the same: work that is timeless, purposeful, and deeply human. We avoid trends that trade longevity for attention, embracing restraint instead.
Great design is inseparable from great systems. Beautiful branding without operational excellence eventually fails; sophisticated technology without thoughtful communication rarely connects. We bridge those worlds.
The founder
Lara Nelson — creative strategist & executive partner.
Lara is a creative strategist, marketing director, designer, copywriter, systems builder, and executive partner whose career has consistently blended creativity with operational thinking. Rather than working through a single discipline, she connects branding, technology, marketing, operations, and customer experience into one cohesive strategy.
Her background spans banking, executive leadership support, education, marketing, luxury real estate, business operations, web development, and creative direction — an unusually broad range that lets her understand not only how something should look, but how it should function inside a growing business.
She develops marketing campaigns, designs and manages websites, writes advertising copy and long-form editorial, oversees social strategy, creates print collateral, researches emerging technology, implements AI into operations, and provides executive-level support that lets leadership teams stay focused on growth.
On the team at Paul Mitchell Schools, she developed the training manual and systems used to implement the Robert Jones Future Professional Makeup Academy — the kind of behind-the-scenes structure she now brings to her own clients.
Her approach rarely changes: understand how a business actually operates first. Only then design the brand.
Our philosophy
Strategy first. Then the design.
Most agencies ask what something should look like. We begin somewhere else entirely — how the business should actually work.
Strategy before design
We begin with how a business should work — not how it should look. The answer shapes every decision that follows.
Root causes, not symptoms
What a client calls a design problem is often a messaging, systems, or customer-experience problem. We solve the real one.
Restraint as craft
Thoughtful typography, editorial layouts, and refined copy — so the message, not the design, becomes the hero.
Built to endure
We avoid trends that trade longevity for attention. The work should keep delivering long after it ships.
Core values
The principles behind the work.
Intentionality
Every element has a purpose. Nothing exists simply because it is fashionable.
Craftsmanship
Typography, spacing, language, photography, and systems are treated with equal care.
Clarity
Complexity is reduced until the essential message becomes obvious.
Integrity
Recommendations serve the client — not whatever creates additional billable work.
Longevity
We build brands and systems capable of serving businesses for years, not months.
Quiet confidence
The strongest brands rarely need to shout. Trust is earned through consistency.
Our mission
To help businesses communicate with greater clarity, operate more intentionally, and build brands that endure.
